How Tony Robbins Can Help You Overcome Stress and Depression

With over 30 years of life coaching experience, Tony Robbins is the go-to guy if you want to make a change in your life that you believe is unchangeable. He’s changed the lives of thousands of people all around the world. If you want to learn how to deal with your stress and depression, you need to at least give Tony Robbins a shot.

Mentor Me: Tony Robbins

Tony Robbins emphasizes that if you feel overwhelmed, you need to first own the fact that you’ve identified that as the way that you live. He says, “You get what you tolerate,” and so you’ve gotten used to tolerating that stress. You start thinking this is me when all it is, is a habit. It’s a habit of the way of looking at life. That’s a habit, and I’ll use your body. It’s a habit of language that you use because certain words when you use them, you become them.

Training Yourself Physically and Mentally

Tony Robbins believes that you have to train yourself both physically and mentally. It’s like working out. People often ask him if he has bad days, and he admits, “Of course I get pissed off. I get frustrated. I feel sad about things, but I don’t stay there.” He emphasizes that he used to live in a state of depression all the time, but now, he never gets depressed because he’s so positive. It’s not fake; it’s like a muscle. You can train yourself to feel passionate and strong.

Don’t Settle: Train Your Body and Mind

“Don’t settle. Remember, you get what you tolerate,” Robbins says. Put yourself in gear, go for a workout, start to train your body and your mind. Also, find something you want to serve greater than yourself because if you’re just doing this for you, you’re going to probably have bad days. But if you’re doing it for your family, community, or humanity, you will find a level of energy inside you. You’ll get insights you never had before.

The Importance of Motive

Robbins strongly believes that motive does matter. If your motive is just for yourself, you don’t get much insight. Life supports you because you’re part of life. But if you’re trying to support more than yourself, you get a vision. That’s how businesses grow and movements happen. Find something bigger than yourself to serve and make sure that you don’t tolerate weakness in yourself. That doesn’t mean you won’t feel sad, but you won’t stay there because you made that decision.

Conditioning Your Mind

The breakthrough happens by Conditioning Your Mind every day. This involves feeding it a role model or story and putting yourself in a peak state. Follow through by getting physically strong and creating a little ritual of doing a bit each day. This builds momentum. The most crucial part is understanding your “why.” It has to be something you’re hungry for because the only difference in people is hunger. If you’re not hungry, get around people who are hungry, and something will hit you.

Changing Your Standards

Robbins shares a personal story about visiting a billionaire’s house and feeling depressed afterward because his own home felt inadequate. This experience changed his standards. He stresses that people can change their standards by getting around where it’s better and associating with what’s true. They can do it because they’re excited about something new they want to take on. Everyone’s different, but they need to find the “why” and come up with daily rituals to get them going, step by step, to build momentum.

A Five-Point Plan to Overcome Stress and Trauma

Robbins outlines a five-point plan anyone can follow to overcome stress and trauma:

1. Identify Your Emotional Home

The quality of your life is the quality of where you live emotionally. Angry people find a way to get angry, sad people find a way to be sad, and caring people find a way to care for others. Identify where you are emotionally and work on changing it.

2. Feed Your Mind

Every day, stand guard at the door of your mind and feed it something good. Read or listen to something positive for at least 30 minutes a day. Your mind is like a garden; if you don’t plant flowers, weeds will grow automatically.

3. Strengthen Your Body

Fear, stagnation, numbness, sadness, and rage are all physical. Change your body by doing an intense workout, a run, or even an intense walk. Science shows that this instantly changes your biochemistry and your state of mind.

4. Find a Mission Bigger Than Yourself

Find something you aspire to that is worth more than your pain. Having a mission bigger than yourself gives you a reason to push through tough times.

5. Find a Role Model

Find someone who has achieved what you want to achieve. Seeing someone else succeed makes it real for you. Role models make the impossible seem possible.

Getting Over Fear and Paralysis

When you feel fear and paralysis, remember that money is not your life. Focus on what truly matters. Get physical, go for an intense run, lift weights, or do something that pumps blood and oxygen through you. This changes your entire psychology. Embrace human beings around you and ensure you’re a good friend to feel better.

The Power of Giving

Helping others puts your life in perspective. Robbins’ organization feeds millions of people during Thanksgiving because someone once fed his family. Helping others reminds you that life is not about you; it’s about “we”. The secret to a great life is giving. When you realize you have something to give, even if you’ve lost a lot, your life improves, and you find meaning.

Conclusion

The point of the Mentor Me series is to spend more quality time with people who’ve achieved massive success. Hopefully, a little bit of how they think rubs off on us.
